2015 End Of Year Awards

Well it has been a while since the last ‘Road Stories’ blog as Class took up the reins reporting back on our foreign trips in his 'Tour Diaries' so to finish off the year I’m doing a quick rundown of the final few gigs and a few “Top 5’s” to recap the highs and lows of 2015. I hope you’ve enjoyed this years 'Road Stories' as much as I have enjoyed being a part of it all.

Zanzibar, Liverpool (23.10.15)
Class says I shouldn’t be so negative about this gig but personally I really didn’t enjoy this one. I found the student crowd were tepid throughout all five bands and had that vibe of “too cool to clap” as Gibbons once said. I was told early on that we weren’t allowed to set up merch so I only managed to wangle a fiver out of a relatively busy bar. I felt sorry for Black Diamond (the headlining band) who ended up playing to practically no one in their hometown as it emptied out, bad luck guys.

Rugby Tavern, Bispham (24.10.15)
I didn’t attend this one seeing as it was Class’s Father-in-laws 60th birthday party and not a night for pushing merchandise. By all accounts it went really well with Class getting told by some of the old dears how much they would like to marry him (that’s his side of the story anyhow).

Bootleg Social, Blackpool (30.10.15)
This Halloween gig was awesome, absolutely loved it. The Drop-Out Wives were crazy as always and knocked out a great set of garage rock n roll. Next up were the New Generation Superstars who I’d not seen full electric before (only acoustically at Breaking Bands festival in the summer), they played a great set and enjoyed it so much I bought a shirt and an album, one for fans of the Scando-sound of rock. The Idol Dead really set the bar high next with Polly wearing a corset and suspenders for most of the set, typically full of energy throwing shapes and kicks all over the place. An ace band and ace guys all round. The Sentons topped the night off massively with KC from ID ending up on someone shoulders rocking out and the whole audience going crazy. I purposefully reserved myself during the bands so I could actually remember this Bootleg gig, after my catastrophe at the ‘Mainstream Single Launch’ earlier in the year. Night was capped off nicely by partying till 6 in the morning with the Idol Dead. Felt like death the next day after doing whiskey shots with Tim, totally worth it though.

Rebellion Bar, Manchester (20.11.15)
This one followed our second Euro-Tour and I really enjoyed the night. So much so that it’s in my “Top 5 Venues” (see below for a more comprehensive rundown). The lads rocked it and I shifted some records, meeting some interesting folk along the way. Young Lust, featuring Stevi Pearce from Warrior Soul and Dave Sanders from Falling Red, played a real cool set of glam, I definitely want to see them live again.

The Railway Club, Southport (27.11.15)
This was all about giving something back as all the funds raised were for children in need. The first two bands were covers bands who did a sterling job of warming the slightly older crowd up for the SB to lay waste, as always they obliged. I then had my moment in the spotlight by picking the winning numbers for the raffle and proper made a little kids day by rooting through the tickets for his number so he could win the huge cake... I’m a good egg at times.

The Iron Road, Evesham (05.12.15)
Last gig of the year, the 38th of 2015 and 80th since I’d started touring with the band. We were playing with the Idol Dead and New Generation Superstars again so it was sure to be a blast. On the way Damo started moaning that he needed a slash but as we were in a rush he had to behave like a grown up and hold it. Almost did himself proud as he lasted about half an hour before demanding Scott pull over and let him out only a mere 2 minutes away from the venue. We pulled into the venue and loaded in swiftly to find it was one mega cool place with Faster Pussycat playing there next year as well as the Quireboys and Nashville Pussy. Then came the hilarious news that Damo had lost his two-week old £600 phone, so Scott drove him back to the site of where he took a piss and promptly ran over his phone. We fucking howled with laughter at yet another misfortune for the half-hawk, half-Praying Mantis. Bless him, I felt mega sorry for him as he rang his missus on Scott’s phone and when he told her she called him “terrible” and hung up. He capped the hilarity saying “my boiler is fucked, my new phone is fucked and yesterday my fucking kettle broke so when I get home I can’t even have a fucking brew!”.  Any Damo fans out there will be pleased to know I bought him a beer to appease his sorry mush but even then he turned into the cheekiest snake in the pit by saying “go to the cash machine so you can buy me more beer so then I’ll be happier”, even in sorrow he is still a dick.

Anyhow, The Idol Dead were up first and as per they blew it away. Love this band, full of great lyrics and killer rhythms all whilst wearing guyliner and jumping around like lunatics, my kind of band completely. SB were up next with a great set to finish the year on. Class was full of beans giving it shapes and waving his shaggy mane about like the 80’s never went away (I can tell he has been practicing shapes at home, good lad) my whip-around (now known as ‘the most famous whip-around in rock history’) on merch proved fruitful and much praise was heaped on the boys and rightly so. New Generation Superstars closed the show and were typically good fun and catchy as hell. I was slightly jealous as they had just come back from my dream destination – Helsinki, having played a festival (lucky bastards, I need a contact for the Bombs in Finland as they would be hailed as heroes). NGS finished with ‘Blitzkreig Bop’ joined by Damo, Class, Polly, Tim and KC from the ID giving it excellent backing vocals. First time I saw a smile on Damo’s face all night. The journey home was simple and pain-free with classic tunes from the Stones and Uncle Tupelo with bits of CCR for good measure. The burning topic of conversation was that 2015 has been ace - how in the hell do we top it? Obvious answer is drop an amazing album, go abroad more, play bigger festivals and headline Wembley Stadium… 2016 here we come!

Top 5 Venues of 2015
1. Cowboy und Indianer (Hamburg, Germany)
This place took top spot due to being placed slap bang in the middle of the Reeperbahn in Hamburg and, as we soon discovered, was the most decadent and sleazy place the Sentons have ever played. Owned by a dude close to seven-foot tall called Sven, we were fed free beer like it was water and shots for desserts. Two nights on the trot took its toll on us all, apart from Gibbons who survives on Coffee. Damo in particular had a bad night as he lost all his spending money and his phone, plus he probably got an almighty bollocking of the missus when he told her. All joking aside the sound was quality and both nights the guys played there it started empty and ended up packed and people bought a lot of merch, which for Germans is quite rare by all accounts.

2. Bootleg Social (Blackpool)
Our new regular club for Blackpool after the closure of the Blue Room during the summer. This place was quick to help us out with our 3-date launch weekend with the Danish boys and the Halloween gig. I’m sure it will be hosting many more SB gigs in the future. Great food, great staff and a few crates of free booze all on our doorstep… can’t go wrong… well you can if you’re me and got too pissed the first night of the launch weekend and ended up smashing our merch-case to smithereens and having to ask Gibbons repeatedly what country I’m in - bad merch-boy.

3. Fighting Cocks (Kingston)
Yes we played there in 2014, but in 2015 this place just got better and better. More people turned out each time we were in town and at the Mainstream launch party we heard some of the loudest chants for the SB I’ve ever heard. The audience really went for it, so did Johnny and Damo for that matter when during Jackals they both joined the mosh pit whilst still playing. The London faces who we now call friends are mega-fans who buy all the merch and never let us down whether that means just turning up, promoting online or bringing new faces down to worship at the altar of the SB. Ginger Wildheart may call the place Shitsville but we love it and hope to back again in 2016.

4. Rebellion Bar (Manchester)
One of the last venues we played this year and one I had heard of but not had the pleasure of attending. Free beer (again) in the green room and an ace sound out front. The audience was by no means the largest of the year but were certainly enthusiastic and the applause was righteous after every song. Not one of my best gigs, granted, seeing as, after a few cold ones, I started chatting up this bird and was getting along mightily with her, to the point she even asked to kiss my stomach tattoo for some strange reason. After we swapped numbers and departed JG promptly ripped me all the way home saying “dude that number will be fake just you watch, why would she message a dick like you?” and other typical JG putdowns. My pride was not to be dented though as I was convinced me and the bird (can’t recall her name to be honest) would in fact meet again somehow… well it didn’t happen, she gave me a false number – for fucks sake.

5. Home (Eibergen, Netherlands)
This place was the last gig in Holland during the October tour and boy what a way to finish. We were all tired and weary after three solid days of drinking and ready for a bit of home soil and family love. After this gig we were all on a massive high as we jetted home early the next day. Playing with the amazing ‘Shawn James and the Shapeshifters’ all the way from Arkansas, USA we joined them and the owners for a huge banquet that more than filled all 15-20 of us. With smoking being allowed in doors, despite the potential 5000 euro fine, the owners clearly cared for the bands and its patrons - not the red-tape legal stuff implemented by the shits in suits running the EU. SB knocked it way out the ball park and once again the venue started more or less dead and filled to near capacity by the time the finals chords rang out. Then Shawn James really took it to a new level drawing stadium sized shouts and applause throughout the whole night and did about 3 encores if I remember rightly (well played boys). Also notable was me and Damo doing extremely well on merch that night, doing the biggest discounts known to man and I think for the first time in SB history managing to sell everyone in the bar a CD. Heroes of that night were definitely the Freaky Naughtiez.

Top 5 “Oh shit!” Moments of 2015
1. Hellfire Breakdown (06.06.15)
The trailer tyre bursting on the motorway on the way to the Hellfire Club Redhill and not having the tools or a spare to fix it therefore having to cancel the gig. Plus we nearly got killed on the side of the road. On the bright-side we did have an ace meal in a lovely pub (me, Damo, JG and Class did, we left Scott to deal with the RAC man outside and he went mental afterwards because we didn't get him a burger).

2. Mainstream Merch Mess (02.10.15)
Me waking up after the Mainstream launch not knowing how the hell I’d got home. Class later told me I had tried to pull about five birds in the bar, smashed the merch case and forgot which country I was in. I had also claimed to have sold 50 quids worth of merch and handed him about 84p.

3. Air Amsterdam (09.11.15)
All of us missing our flight home from Holland at the end of the second euro tour. Cost us about an extra 120 quid each and we actually saw our scheduled flight take off we were so close to the airport.  After 7 hours in an empty airport and about twenty smokes later we departed the Orange land having not killed each other and closer mates than ever.

4. Fireman Shots (16.10.15)
Me, Damo and Class hitting the free Fireman shots in Munnekezjil and ending up asleep on each other in the van with Class cradling Damo like a wounded soldier then unfortunately passing out into my crotch. Class also ended up cutting his arm thanks to Scott dropping him as he was forcibly carried out of the venue. The ‘oh shit’ moment came when the alcohol amnesia kicked in the next day and JG had to fill in the blanks. Damo also woke with his only pair of shoes and 2nd pair of jeans covered in Class puke… he moaned like hell for hours about that.

5. Wakefield Sick-fest (07.02.15)
On the way back from the first gig of the year in Wakefield having drunk too much wine and passing out I ended up puking all over a very unimpressed Damo in the backseat. Scott had to pull over as he and JG got out and began dry-heaving, making all sorts of dramatic noises as huge juggernauts roared past us. Class later described the whole scene brilliantly stating “I just sat there with a beer thinking what a bunch of knobheads!”.

Top 5 Best Moments of 2015
1. Lechlade Stage (24.05.15)
The boys playing Lechlade Festival on a gigantic stage and then later watching the mighty Status Quo rocking about 4000 people (Class met Rick Parfitt backstage but somehow didn’t know who he was).

2. Mass Vendetta Complete (July 2015)
New album Mass Vendetta was finished in July. Travelling to a London gig hearing the final master copy, it’s amazing and I can’t wait for you all to hear it. I’d give you some insider knowledge like song titles but I’m not allowed to divulge, so all I’ll say is my favourites are tracks 4, 7, 8 and 10.

3. 7Hard Record Deal (November 2015)
Getting signed to 7Hard records meaning Mass Vendetta will be distributed worldwide. Enough said.

4. The Reeperbahn (November 2015)
Staying on the Reeperbahn, great gigs, great city with awesome people. Went record shopping and managed to scored Total 13 by Backyard Babies on vinyl, massive win.

5. Backyard Babies (November 2015)
Not technically an SB gig but watching the Babies with Scott and Joey then meeting the band afterwards. Gutted I didn’t think to have a copy of Chapter Zero to hand over but there is always next time. Damo didn’t attend due to working nights and Johnny didn’t attend due to allegedly meeting a bird on the train home from Ellesmere Port where he was valuing guitars for his work that day, again allegedly.

Individual reviews and tips for each band member for 2016…

Joey
* Managed to get his missus pregnant again this year and is expecting another bundle of joy around May so congratulations!
* Wrote and recorded an amazing album this year which shall be unleashed worldwide in April 15th for you all to hear.
* Kicked major ass on vocals and bass every time and apart from a sore throat and a couple of cuts on his arm has emerged this year relatively unscathed.
* Can’t really give the lad tips due to him being Class by name Class by nature but if anything - write a glam song perhaps (probably get a bollocking for asking for that millions of times before).

Scott
* Managed to keep the legendary Mason freak-outs to a minimum this year somehow (shame as they are well funny).
* Has been an absolute hero for driving 6-hour long treks to London on numerous occasions, then playing a kick ass gig amd driving back 6-hours, plus piss-stops - just so JG can get into work early, huge kudos to the bearded one for that.
* Has owned and broke more drumsticks than I’ve had hot dinners, a testament to his heavy as hell playing and has done an excellent job on the new album, which in a few songs he seems to have hit everything on the kit within two-seconds.
* Tips for next year are the ever present advice of lose the beard and use hair straighteners, you will be as cool as me then Scotty-boy.

Johnny
* Considering I’ve spent most of this year calling him Steptoe me and Gibbons have got on famously, providing a tonne of comedy(usually at my expense) for the others on the way to gigs. From me saying he looks like a shit Raoul Duke to him calling me the “Rotter-Puller” and a confused metrosexual, it’s always good fun between me and JG.
* Done an amazing job live and enabled me to get some killer shots of him nailing the rhythm and attacking the solo’s like a rabid Rottweiler.
* His lead work on the new album is just out of this world and will really go a long way in cementing our Uncle Salty as a true guitar hero.
* Tips for next year include attend a Backyard Babies gig if you’ve bought a ticket and don’t ever take pictures of your nut-sack and post it as my profile picture again you dick. Also get a leather jacket,  grow your hair back and don’t admit you like Coldplay’s first album and dance music… douche.

Damien
* Well this is going to be fun, hence why I’ve left him until last. Damo has finally got his troublesome amp and pedals working and is now guaranteed to not only be the flashiest of the SB onstage but his equipment doesn’t cut out half way through a song.
* He also managed to get his missus pregnant again and is expecting a little girl next April. Congratulations!
* He has also had the most bad luck this year as he has lost his wallet, broken 2 phones, broken 2 fingers, suffered a concussion, fractured his coccyx, been drawn on lots of time, had food and beer kicked out of his hand, forgot where his house was, had the piss taken out of his fashion sense, fell into a stream in Holland, been puked on several times and had a list of 66 plus nicknames drawn up for him.
* No tips for Damo just carry on doing what you’re doing it’s a source of much hilarity for us all.

Well there we have it, 2015 is over with gig wise and it's been awesome. Loved every minute of it and as well as being a great laugh it’s been a valuable education for the SB and myself. Thank you for reading the blogs, buying the albums and T-shirts, promoting online and most of all - coming to the gigs and giving the Senton Bombs your time and attention. 2016... bring it on!
