Planet Mosh Interview
23.02.14

LouellaDeville_ @PlanetMosh features @thesentonbombs as they are about to head out on a sixteen date tour incorporating two dates in Denmark, NLC/RAPCA Festival in Nottingham and Nice N Sleazy Festival in Morecambe. History of The Senton Bombs

The Senton Bombs were formed in Bispham, Blackpool in 2004, originally known as The Terrorists. They released four demos DDT (2005), Death Valley Driver (2006), with Crimson Mask and From Parts Unknown in 2007. Recording of their first full studio album Sweet Chin Music began in 2009 ahead of it’s 2010 release. Their second album Gambit came out in 2012 (receiving 9/10 from PlanetMosh), together with their first video Hooked. Chapter Zero is the bands third full studio album. Chapter Zero contains eleven original tracks with lots of influences and a hard rocking sound. Released by STP Records on the 27th September 2013 it has received much critical acclaim, getting a five star review from PlanetMosh.

The original line-up was Joey Class (bass and vocals), brothers Damien and Jimmy Kage on guitars and Ronnie Bomb on drums. 2007 saw the exit of Ronnie as he left to pursue a career as a record producer; he has since mixed, mastered and engineered all three of the band’s albums. Renowned local drummer Scott Mason was available to take up the drum throne. In May 2008 Jimmy Kage left to go to University to further his musical education. For a time the band became a three-piece, with the lead vocalist also playing bass which has worked for Motorhead from time to time. In 2009, with Damien enjoying a break in the USA and Sweet Chin Music nearing completion, the band called in long-time friend and fan Johnny Gibbons to help lay some solo tracks. Impressed with the results Johnny was invited to take over the role Jimmy had vacated and he immediately accepted. Which leaves the band with the line-up we see today.

1. How long have you played bass/sung?
Played bass for about 13 years. I’ve been trying to sing for as long as I can remember.

2. Why did you decide to play drums/guitar/bass?
I was singing in a punk band when I was 17 and we needed a bass-player.

3. What was the first record you bought? I think I scored a load of metal and hip-hop records from my mates. The first record I bought from a store was “One Hot Minute” – RHCP. Cost me all my spends.

4. Who are your biggest influences?
Joe Strummer (The Clash), Greg Graffin (Bad Religion), Fat Mike (NOFX), Tim Armstrong (Rancid), Eddie Spaghetti (The Supersuckers), Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young.

5. Who is your favorite artist/band?
It’s too tough to call, I have a new favourite every week. Right now I’m quite obsessed with the Drive-By Truckers and Jason Isbell. Of all time I always go back to Aerosmith.

6. What’s your favorite song?
Impossible question. If pushed I might have to say Motley Crue – “Kickstart My Heart”.

7. What, for you, is the most memorable album in your collection and why?
Tie-breaker between NOFX – “White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean”, the record that got me into all this style of stuff and “The Evil Powers of Rock & Roll” by The Supersuckers because it has been the soundtrack to so many great nights.

8. Which is the best/worst gig you have played and why?
Just for the atmosphere of friends, family and hardcore fans, last year’s Chapter Zero Launch Party was a standout. We have had some legendary train-wrecks back in the day. The worst was a Christmas show that I’d rather not talk about as I have to repress the urge to kill Damo. Absolute fuckin’ shambles. Memorably shit gigs were a Birthday show at Rock Hard Records where Damo and his brother, ex-Bombs guitarist Jimmy, got wasted and fought over an amp. Jimmy had his dick out on the dance floor and played the whole set a note behind the rest of us. There was also a Halloween show we headlined and played one song before a big fight broke out on-stage. Thankfully the good outweigh the bad these days.

9. If you could open for a headlining act who would it be?
Probably AC/DC. I saw them at Download in 2010 and they brought their own stage. I would happily open for DC playing on the grass in front of their stage.

10. Apart from The Bombs which up and coming bands would you recommend people listen to/go to see?
All the STP band are great. Fellow Blackpool bands: Constant Source Of Disappointment (CSOD) have a new record out “Going Nowhere” that is awesome. The Drop-Out Wives have just released their first album “Voting For Gloss” that I’m looking forward to hearing. Dischord are without doubt one of the finest punk rock bands to emerge in recent years. Our Danish buddies X Contract and Kjurious who we will be touring with this year, JEES from Finland and Born To Destruct who we always have a blast with. There’s loads of good up and coming bands around, I simply recommend people go out and find them.

Damien Kage: Guitars & Backing Vocals / Bomb: 2004 – Present / Previous Bands: Reckless Youth.

1. How long have you played guitar?
13 years.

2. Why did you decide to play guitar?
It is something that seems to run in my family. I started off learning Metallica and Megadeth songs.

3. What was the first record you bought?
Best of the Beast – Iron Maiden.

4. Who are your biggest influences?
My influences are always changing. If you were to ask me that question 15 years ago my answer would have been Metallica, Megadeth, NOFX and Bad Religion. Drive by Truckers and Jason Isbell at the moment.

5. Who is your favorite artist/band?
Kyuss.

6. What’s your favorite song?
Lynard Skynard – “I Need You”.

7. What, for you, is the most memorable album in your collection and why?
Megadeth – “Countdown To Extinction”. No explanation required.

8. Which is the best/worst gig you have played and why?
The worst was a Christmas gig in Blackpool back when we were a 3-piece. I remember trying to tune my guitar up mid set and noticed a crack on the neck of my Les Paul. In a drunk rage I decided to smash it, jump into the drum kit and walk off stage to the bar area. The gig was a car crash. Mason and Joey completed the set as a drum and bass duo. I have discussed with Joey about writing a blog about past bad gigs. The best was the Chapter zero launch party 2013.

9. If you could open for a headlining act who would it be?
Backyard Babies.

10. Apart from The Bombs which up and coming bands would you recommend people listen to/go to see?
The Idol Dead.

Scott Mason:  Drums / Bomb: January 2008 – Present / Previous Bands: The Emotional Problems of Dirk Diggler, Tartan Scars.

Scott Mason: Drums

Scott Mason: Drums

1. How long have you played drums?
13 years.

2. Why did you decide to play drums?
When I was in school I heard someone playing drums and I instantly wanted to learn.

3. What was the first record you bought?
The first album I bought was Slipknot – “Slipknot”.

4. Who are your biggest influences?
Brett Reed (ex-Rancid), Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), Magnus “Adde” Andreasson (Hardcore Superstar), Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion).

5. Who is your favorite artist/band?
Rancid.

6. What’s your favorite song?
Rancid – “Ruby Soho”.

7. What, for you, is the most memorable album in your collection and why?
It has to be Rancid – “…And Out Come The Wolves” for the reason it got me into a lot of the music I listen to now. I like various genres but I always come back to this album, it just brings back good memories.

8. Which is the best/worst gig you have played and why?
The best I have played is when we supported Barb Wire Dolls at the Star & Garter last year, the whole band were on fire and we got an incredible response. My worst gig has got to be Chorley in 2012. Johnny mysteriously hurt his hand and could not play the gig so we played as a 3-piece to about ten people.

9. If you could open for an headlining act who would it be?
This is a very hard question. Two bands I would love to open for are AC/DC and The Supersuckers.

10. Apart from The Bombs which up and coming bands would you recommend people listen to/go to see?
I would definitely recommend Constant Source Of Disappointment (CSOD), Dischord and Dirtbox Disco.

Johnny Gibbons: Guitars & Backing Vocals / Bomb: July 2009 – Present / Previous Bands: Devil 2 Pay, Hind-D, The Gary Hughes Band.

Johnny Gibbons: Guitar and Backing Vocals

Johnny Gibbons: Guitar and Backing Vocals

1. How long have you played guitar?
Going on 24 years or so.

2. Why did you decide to play guitar?
I saw a live video of G’n’R and watching Slash ripping it up, thought “That is the coolest man alive and I want to do THAT!”

3. What was the first record you bought?
“Appetite For Destruction” – G’n’R and “Passion & Warfare” – Steve Vai. Unadulterated rock & roll and precision guitar wizardry.

4. Who are your biggest influences?
Zakk Wylde, Bernie Torme, Gary Moore, Slash, Clapton.

5. Who is your favorite artist/band?
Tom Waits, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Gary Moore, Cream.

6. What’s your favorite song?
All-time: “Heart of Saturday Night” by Tom Waits; Currently: “Ain’t Coming Home” by Silvertide.

7. What for you is the most memorable album in your collection and why?
“Veritas” by Gary Hughes (Ten vocalist); I had a great time playing on it and in the process learned a hell of a lot from Gary. The first experience I’d had of session work and playing on a commercial release and thus, a very special album to me.

8. Which is the best/worst gig you have played and why?
Best: Any of the ones I’ve played with the Bombs, it’s not a band to me, it’s a family I never knew I had and every gig (good or bad) is special in some way, because I’m playing with them. Worst: I played a charity festival with a cover band many years ago where the singer and drummer were drunk to the point of incoherence, myself and the other sober member had a hellacious 40 minutes of trying to adjust to wildly varying tempos and keys… Less fun than a tax audit.

9. If you could open for an headlining act who would it be?
Supersuckers, Black Star Riders, Drive By Truckers.

10. Apart from The Bombs which up and coming bands would you recommend people listen to/go to see?
Off the top of my head; Constant Source of Disappointment, The Drop Out Wives, The Idol Dead, In Evil Hour… Hell, loads but those are the immediate ones that spring to mind.
